The
sun was shining bright for the inaugural Cowichan Bay Adventure Race that was
held on May 13, 2000. It was the first-ever adventure race on Vancouver Island;
a one-day race that featured 44 racers, from Vancouver Island, the Lower Mainland,
Washington State and Oregon. The race attracted some of the best adventure racers
in Canada, as well as many first timers. All racers completed the course in under
seven hours with Dave Norona of North Vancouver winning with a time of 4:14. Team
John Henry, which consisted of first time adventure racer Calla Romses and veteran
teammate, Randy Hunter, finished a close second with a time of 4:16.
Racers
started from the shores of Cowichan Bay with a 8km kayak across the still water
to Genoa Bay where they made the transition to their mountain bike for a 25 km
discipline filled with a grueling climb and fast single track downhill sections.
In the middle of the mountain bike course, racers were required to dismount and
complete an orienteering course on the top of Mt. Tzouhalem.

On
the next transition, racers traded bikes for shoes and ran back up the mountain
for a rugged 8 km trail run. Following that leg, exhausted racers were back on
the bikes for a quick ride to Genoa Bay for the kayak sprint to the finish line
at Cowichan Bay.
Post race celebrations followed in
the evening with a salmon dinner, awards, prizes, live band, dancing, and, if
you stayed long enough, a final transition to the Galaxy...
It
was a weekend filled with great memories, new friends, and plenty of excitement.
