Our Charity

Win a Trip for Two anywhere WestJet flies.

The MOMAR is proud to have the Make-A-Wish Foundation as our official charity. Make-A-Wish grants the wishes of children with life threatening illnesses to enrich the human experience with hope, strength, and joy.

Over the past five years, we have raised over $24,000 for this great cause. Please show your support by taking part in our various fundraising initiatives such as the Mega 50/50 Draw, Cowbells for Wishes, and our Grand Prize.

Please bring cash and your generous hearts on race weekend and help us raise over $5000 this year!

How to get there

Cumberland is 1.25 hours from Nanaimo, 2.5 hours from Victoria, 4 hours from Vancouver, and 6 hours from Seattle.

For ferry information visit www.bcferries.com or call 1-888-223-3779. The ferries may be busy this weekend so you might want to make reservations (only $17 per vehicle).

Seattle racers can catch the ferry from Anacortes to Victoria and drive up the Island Highway to Cumberland (3 hours) . Visit http://www.wsdot.wa.gov/ferries/index.cfm for more information.

BY AIR: Westjet Airlines will fly you into directly into Comox which is 30 minutes from the race start/finish. Click here for map from the airport. There are direct flights from all of Canada's major cities, as well as, from the US (LA, Vegas, Tampa, etc). Check the website for more info www.westjet.com. Once you fly in, you can rent a vehicle from Budget Car and Truck Rental at the airport and drive to the race start.

Accommodations

We recommend that racers consider staying at the Riding Fool Hostel in Cumberland for Friday night since that is where Friday night registration will be and it's minutes away from the race start/finish line. The Riding Fool Hostel is right above Dodge City Cycles where you can conveniently get your bike checked or pick up any last minute race supplies.

Another great place to stay is at the Stansbury Guest House in Cumberland. Situated in the heart of Cumberland, the Stansbury offers fully furnished 2 and 3 bedroom suites which are self-contained, spacious and newly renovated. Both suites feel like a "home away from home" and are ideal for your team on race weekend. Call 1-877-336-2062 to make a reservation.

Mt. Washington - Since the post-race dinner and awards banquet will be held up at Mt. Washington, we HIGHLY recommend that all out-of-town racers try to book accommodations on the mountain for Saturday night. Condos are very inexpensive at this time of the year and there are many places that sleep 6-8 people and rent for $50-100 per night, if you book early. It's a beautiful place to spend the weekend. Go to www.mtwashington.ca to make a reservation.

We also recommend the Cumberland Lake Park Campground for a great place to camp on Friday night.

Other Accommodation Options:

For a more comprehensive list visit the Cumberland Chamber of Commerce .

Kayak Rentals

It is highly recommended that you reserve your kayak as soon as possible as they book very quickly.

* Because the Sport Course starts 90 minutes after the Enduro course, the kayak companies are allowed to DOUBLE BOOK their kayaks. Let them know which course you are racing and be sure you are booking for the right race.

Click here for a full list of Kayak Suppliers

Mandatory Gear Go to the GEAR page to view the unofficial mandatory gear list.
Bike Check

Official Bike Inspection Shops: Your bike must be inspected for safety by one of the following bike shops. You can get your bike inspected starting Friday, Sept 18th. If you cannot get your bike inspected prior to the race, Dodge City Cycles will be open late to check your bike. However, to avoid the lineup, we highly recommend that you take your bike to a shop the week prior.

Dodge City Cycles will be open late on Friday night for anyone that wasn't able to have their bike inspected earlier.

Do I need Support personnel ? No. The MOMAR is an unsupported race.
Any recommendations for Sunday activities?

Race Rules & Regulations

Ranking:

  • Teams will be ranked according to the number of Checkpoints they collect.
  • In the event of a tie, the finishing time (less penalties) will be used to further rank teams.
  • Please note that for the Cumberland MOMAR, the Orienteering Stage has time penalties for missed CPs (30 minutes per CP) and does NOT factor into the total CP count.

Time Penalties:

  • 60 minute penalty if you RAM your kayak on the beach upon your return from the kayak stage
  • 15 minutes penalty if you are caught out of visual range of you teammates.
  • 15 minutes for receiving outside support from any non-racer.
  • 15 minutes for the first traffic violation. Disqualification for the second.
  • 15 minutes for littering.
  • 15 minutes for using any form of electronic communication device between teammates (ie FRS radios)
  • 15 minute for using any form of listening device (ie iPod, walkman, etc). Disqualification for the second.
  • 5 minutes for modifying your MOMAR bib number. You must wear it on the front and it cannot be folded or cut in any way.
  • 5 minutes for each item that you do not have that is on the mandatory gear list.

You will be disqualified for the following reasons:

  • You deviate severely from the race course (discretion of the race director)
  • If one of your teammates does not cross the finish line. In adventure racing, all members of a team must finish the course together. Thus, you are only as fast as your slowest racer. If a teammate decides they cannot go on, the remaining members may race unranked.
  • Unsportsmanlike conduct to fellow racers, volunteers, or spectators.

Support Personnel:  Absolutely no outside support personnel will be allowed along the race course except at the start and finish lines. 15 minute time penalties will be handed out to teams in violation. Team must be fully self-sufficient and plan provisions accordingly.

In the event of a dispute, please let the Race Officials know and we will do our best to resolve the issue fairly.

Race Day Lunch Royston Lions will be hosting a BBQ lunch all day with hotdog, smokies, and hamburgers. Bring cash.
Volunteers The MOMAR requires a talented team of volunteers to make this event a success. Please encourage your friends and family to volunteer and be part of the fun. All volunteers get a MOMAR t-shirt and entry to the banquet and after-party. Sign me up.
