Next we will look at the Three T's of adventure racing in more detail. Training, Teamwork and Tenacity. With this motto in mind we will we will embark on a number of exercises to demonstrate effective techniques to prepare you for your first MOMAR experience, or improve your performance to the next level.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:
Basic familiarity with the MOMAR format and disciplines and review the Three T's.

- Training: We will evaluate current skill and fitness levels and discuss training methods. We will place particular emphasis on navigation, including map and compass skills.
- Teamwork: MOMAR is not just about solo racing so we will cover selecting and working with your team mates before, during and after a race.
- Tenacity: Adventure racing is a gritty sport where you need to dig deep to pull though the tough moments. Learn how to anticipate, prepare for and overcome the challenges in a race when you may not be sure you can carry on.

NAVIGATION TOPICS :
We will address such navigation topics as compass use, declination, orienting the map, map reading skills, orienteering terminology, staying “in touch” with the map, how to approach AR navigation, and the differences in navigating for the trek, bike and paddle legs. We will also be offering help on how to recover from being “lost” (relocating) and how to navigate faster and with more accuracy.

FAQs:

How long will it take?
The course will take approximately 4-5 hours. Often the enthusiasm of participants means that the course will go on longer to ensure you’ve had all your questions answered and that you’re comfortable with the navigation. Please plan to stay for the entire time, even if we run overtime.

How should I dress and what should I bring?
You should be prepared for any type of weather, and we will be working outside the whole time. Bring some sturdy hiking shoes or adventure race specific footwear (trail runners). Bring a small pack, such as a camelback for carrying water, a snack and extra clothes if the weather is cool. Please bring a compass, pencil and whistle with you. Basically, if it’s in the MOMAR gear list you should have it with you, except paddling gear of course.

What about a compass?
You should have a base-plate style orienteering compass that has a declination adjustment screw on it, such as the Suunto M3. A declination adjustable sighting-compass (has a flip-up lid with a sighting mirror) is fine, but more than what is needed. Compasses without declination adjustment are not recommended.
